The ability to connect your phone to a PC monitor and enjoy a PC like experience on big screen is still rather limited in functionality. To connect your smartphone to a monitor you need a special Pad or Dock. Although Samsung has made it easier for users now. With Galaxy Note 9, you don’t have to spend over a hundred dollars on a dock that would enable your smartphone to power a PC-like experience when connected to an external display. The Galaxy Note 9 lets you do that with a simple USB-connector to HDMI dongle.
Samsung’s USB-C to HDMI dongle
The official Samsung USB-C to HDMI dongle has support for up to UHD and 4K screens with 60Hz refresh rate. It uses the HDMI 2.0 and Display Port 1.2 standards and is compatible with a variety of Samsung devices that have a USB-C port. Dock enables you to mirror the screen of smartphone on TV with this dongle. The dock-less experience is only limited to the Galaxy Note 9.
However, there is no compulsion to buy this particular dongle.
If you want to use DeX without a dock on the Galaxy Note 9. You can achieve the same with an aftermarket dongle. Any USB-C to HDMI dongle can be used to run DeX without a dock on the Galaxy Note 9. The Note 9 will show a notification that it is not official Samsung accessory but you can continue using it and it won’t prevent you from running DeX. But if you don’t own a dongle, I would suggest to buy the Samsung’s official USB-C to HDMI dongle. It can be bought from Amazon around $30.
Apart from full DeX compatibility (no costly, bulky dock needed), the adapter offers standard support for UHD and 4K TVs, as well as 60Hz refresh rate, and both HDMI 2.0 and Display Port 1.2 technology. The official Samsung USB-C to HDMI dongle supports every high-end model from the Galaxy Note 8 to the Galaxy S9, S9+, S8, and S8+.
