Sound on Display

Samsung is bringing the new Sound on Display technology for bezel free design

Smart phone manufacturing companies have tried few things to accommodate the front facing camera – from notches to sliders to punch holes. People have different likes regarding these options but still there are few options available for users but when it comes to earpiece speakers, we have even fewer options. Samsung’s Chinese rivals Xiaomi and Vivo have tried to completely remove the conventional speakers while others have tried with the reduced speaker grille to small slit. It seems that Samsung is trying a new sound on display technology that may come earlier in the next year.

Samsung Display has already revealed its future plans for the next generation display technologies including sound on display which would be the first one to debut among the other four next month. Using the screen as a speaker isn’t new. Xiaomi used the first Mi Mix using a piezoelectric speaker beneath the display to make it transmit sound directly to the ears. Vivo used this technology on the NEX s to achieve almost a bezel less display. This means, Samsung would be the third company to use sound on display.

This technology is developed by Samsung Display and not the Samsung Mobile which implies that any smart phone maker who buy AMOLEDs from Samsung can use this technology. So far, we don’t have any confirm detailed reports about how this technology would be utilized in design but we can assume that there won’t be any punch-holes in the display anymore. Samsung would unveil the new display technology at CES 2019 next month. Some are assuming that premium variant of Galaxy S10 might be using this display screen as well.
