Samsung is working to fix the Galaxy S10’s fingerprint sensor bug

Earlier, we mentioned how a couple discovered a security flaw in one of Samsung’s premium devices – Galaxy S10. Apparently, anyone can unlock the Galaxy S10 with an inexpensive silicon cover on it. It seems more like a security flaw in Samsung’s end rather than a chance on just one device. The gel-cover style protector can somehow confuse the ultrasonic sensor and even if you have already registered your fingerprint while the cover is on, the phone can be unlocked using anyone’s fingerprints, not just those who have registered.

In the initial statement, Samsung urged to use only Samsung’s certified accessories but it is the rule, the thieves may not likely to follow. Samsung now says it’s going to fix the issue. The company told BBC News that it is “aware of the case of S10’s malfunctioning fingerprint recognition and will soon issue a software patch.” One Twitter user claimed that the Note 10, which uses a similar sensor, is also susceptible to the same issue. Samsung suggests keeping using the screen protector that comes with the device out of the box as this one has no apparent issues reported so far.

Galaxy S10 is the only smartphone using the ultrasonic technology for fingerprint recognition and it seems that since the beginning its facing problems with identification of fingerprint after you put a think glass screen protector on. However, a regular plastic protector seems to work just fine with the device. Samsung’s official support site admits that certain screen protectors can be a problem for the phone, noting that “unofficial, scratched or dirty screen protectors may cause the fingerprint sensor to malfunction.” The company has also said that some screen protectors that come with silicone phone cases can be recognized alongside fingerprints by the phone’s sensor, according to a message in Samsung’s support app, Reuters notes.
